With respect, the second half of the caption below the "Down Memory Lane" photo in your 30th July issue is not quite correct.

It was on 13th December 1939 that HMS Exeter, in company with HMS Ajax and HMS Achilles, engaged in battle with the German Pocket Battleship Admiral Graf Spee off the River Plate. During this action HMS Exeter was badly damaged with numerous casualties resulting but she did not sink and in fact made a triumphant return to Plymouth, her home port, on 15th February 1940.
