Week eight of the 2008-09 East Cornwall Skittles League season saw Division One Pensilva-based team Rebels to a fine 6-0 defeat of Terriers.
The captain of the Runaround Cup holders, Andy Hassam (who is also vice-chairman of the club) came up with a top score of 600 pins.
Another player, Sylvan Pook, rolled in a score of 106 and also had the top spare so far of 25 – so it goes to show that plastic can play better than wood, if you get it right.
Meanwhile, Bulldogs were awarded a 6-0 victory after opponents Crickets could not make the match. The hosts had an estimated 535 pins and the visitors 490.
Two years ago, East Cornwall Skittles League life president Gerry Edwards, League secretary Gary Williams and long-time skittler Dave Butt called a special captains' meeting to think of ways to bring the game into the 21st Century with Reclaimed Material Plastic (Durapins) – made by a small family-run firm in Wiltshire.
The committee were presented with several ideas about whether they would wear better or as well as wooden pins.
The women's captains thought the plastic pins would be easier to handle, whereas some of the all-men's teams were worried that all alleys would play the same, affecting the level of competition.
