Calstock Cricket Club picked up their first silverware in more than 20 years as they were crowned the Wombat Sports Tamar Cricket League Champions. The team took maximum points at Werrington on Saturday, giving them an unassailable lead at the top of the table. Calstock's near-perfect campaign of 15 wins from 16 matches was a surprise for the whole League.
As perennial mid-table fodder, the lads were nobody's favourites to win the championship – their first League title in more than 20 years. It has been a great season with the bat from Jack Bouquet, who finished on 499 runs, and skipper Jon Lambert, whose club record 188 not out against Launceston was coupled with a healthy wicket return from Jon Lambert, John Mowbray, Mark Rundle and Ryan Hewitt.
The middle order of Paul Worth, Richard Porritt, Luke Temple-Smith, Dan Stones, Ross Warner, Bob Pomeroy and Nathan Parsons also scored big runs when needed, and a real team effort led to Calstock's success.
Calstock enjoyed their best campaign ever as they added both the West Devon Twenty20 Championship and Premiership Twenty20 cups to their Tamar League success.
The club are ambitious and are seeking to start a youth programme next term, as well as working on the redevelopment of their home ground.
