Callington bounced back to winning ways against struggling Newquay at New Road on Bank Holiday Monday. Electing to bat first, openers Danny Lee and Jake Libby put together a partnership of 64 before Lee was caught behind by Ryan Jelbert off the spin bowling of Martin Pearce after the left hander had scored 28.
Libby, cautiously going about his business, was joined by Dan Davis, who was just looking to push things along when Pearce bowled him for 17. Matt Robins and Libby then added 74, Robins scoring 47 from 53 balls before being run out. Luke Davis and Rob Harrison both made double figures but the rest of the innings belonged to Jake Libby, whose half century came off 119 deliveries. He quickly moved on to 84 and another century was within reach when he was run out.
By this time Pearce had completed his spell, taking two for 40, and the batsmen were finding it easier against the seam bowlers as Callington posted a score of 232 for five.
Newquay, if they were going to even reach 174 to claim a losing draw, needed someone to make a big score. That did not happen as Aidan Libby tempted Corey Harris to drive one into the hands of Rob Harrison and then Harrison himself had Joe Crane caught behind by Joe White.
Tom Brooks had made 13 when he was bowled by Jim Shorten and White stumped Pearce off Luke Davis for 16.
The middle order was removed cheaply by Jim Shorten and Newquay were 65 for seven.
With Shorten employing spin at both ends from Robins and James Boundy, Nick Callender and Jelbert had added another 46 when Jelbert became another White stumping off Robins.
With only 12 overs left Shorten called back Harrison and he mopped up the last two wickets.
By the end of the 44th over the game was over with Newquay all our for 143. Shorten took three for 15 and Harrison three for 38.
