'Living' dragon is made from willow

PLANS are underway for a monster project at Duchy College.

Students at the Stoke Climsland site have designed a 'living' dragon made from willow for the school grounds.

Each year the college organises and runs a conservation day which attracts around 600 children and teachers from local schools.

This year the theme is 'Living Art' and the final year HND Rural Resource Management students have created a Cornish Dragon measuring 120 foot long and 20 tall.

The dragon will be planted so that it creates a series of wigwams, which will be hollow allowing students to walk through and stop off in the various areas. Each area will be exhibiting countryside skills such as willow basket making and traditional wood turning.

College students from various courses will build the skeleton of the dragon and the visiting primary school children will carry out the planting of the willow whips.

Course Tutor Tony Connell, who is working in the project said that local firms have been helpful with the cost of the £2,000 project. 'We have had help from Trago Mills, Mole Valley Farmers and Duchy Timber. We have also been pleased to welcome Stoke Climsland primary school who will help us raise money for the project.'

The dragon will be made by the college's conservation pond and will cover an underground bird hide that students built. The hide is currently disguised under a mound of earth and the dragon will be draped over the top of it; the hide will remain operational.

Once established, the college will need to prune the willow and these whips will be given to local schools.

Tony said that work would start as soon as possible on the construction. 'It should finished by the end of the summer term.'
