United service
THE Callington and Gunnislake Methodist Circuit held a united Maundy Thursday service at Callington Methodist Church. Rev Howard Curnow opened the service and gave a welcome to all.
Members of the choir read the lessons and placed a bowl and towel under the lenten cross to represent Jesus washing the feet of his disciples. The choir under the direction of organist Ken Pethick sang 'Blessed Redeemer', 'When I Survey the Wondrous Cross' and extracts from 'Snakes and Ladders' by Roger Jones. Jill Rickard assisted with the accompaniment. The service ended with celebration of the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper.
The Good Friday morning service was conducted by Rev Anne Curnow and members of the congregation were each given a nail - a very strong reminder of the crucifixion. Readings were given by representatives of the Table Tennis Club and Tony Rickard drove nails into the lenten cross at the place of the hands and feet of Christ.
After the service coffee and hot cross buns were served and members were then able to join the Walk of Witness in Callington.
On Easter Sunday morning members who were able, gathered together to share an early breakfast. The preacher at the morning service was Rev Anne Curnow.
The articles placed on the lenten cross during the weeks of lent, were taken away and all the congregation, beginning with the children of the Junior Church, brought spring flowers to place on the cross to represent new life.
The choir, accompanied by Ken Pethick, sang 'And can it be?'. The service concluded with the Holy Communion.
