Weekend in Paris
SIXTH Form students from Callington Community College enjoyed a weekend in Paris at the beginning of February. They joined over 2000 other students from across the UK at the 2002 'Your Future in Europe' conference, held at the Palais du Congres, set just behind the Arc de Triomphe.
The first day was spent at the conference which encouraged much thought on the question of Europe. A brief historical outline set the scene, followed by a considered view by a top employee of Barclays Bank on the Euro, and the pros and cons of joining it.
Simon Hughes of the Lib Dems spoke clearly on the contemporary issue of asylum seekers and refugees and made some very thought-provoking comments. Two further sessions by the human resources manager of the Financial Times and a marketing expert working in the European dimension outlined the requirements that were being made on people seeking employment in the 21st century.
The last session of the day gave the students the opportunity to fire questions at an invited panel which included MPs Tony Banks, Michael Howard and Simon Hughes.
The final day provided the students with the opportunity to do some sightseeing and explore as much of Paris of possible before embarking on the long journey home.
