Musical items were given by soloist Andrew Williams from Luckett. Accompanied by Jill Rickard, Andrew dedicated one of his gospel songs, 'I'll walk with God', to Brother Jimmy Wilde, whose wife died last week. Members extended deepest sympathy to him and his family. Former Callington primary school Headmaster, Mr Neville Helm was the guest speaker. Taking as his text, the words Jesus spoke when calling his first Disciples, 'Come, follow me', and I will make you fishers of men. He said, we must reflect Christ's love for one another.

Road safety tour

CALLINGTON Community College is about to become the last stop on Cornwall County Council's road safety tour. After visiting several towns in Cornwall, including Liskeard, the tour will conclude in Callington today.

The Council's Road Safety Unit has currently been staging a series of hard hitting, multi agency Young Driver Education Programme workshops aimed at raising awareness amongst students who are beginning to or soon will be learning to drive.

The programme uses a series of workshops including visual reconstructions, simulated alcohol breath tests and role plays, as well as 'Drunk Buster' goggles which enable students to experience the effects of alcohol on their motor skills.

Research has shown that some of the less desirable attitudes of young drivers to 'drive safely' are learned from their parents or peers before they themselves learn to drive. With this in mind the programme aims to foster responsible attitudes to driving at the start of their driving career.

Carol Wright, Road Safety project co-ordinator said: 'Our prediction is that most of the students attending our workshops will learn to drive, some will be involved in a road collision, most will commit motoring offences and a few will have a serious collision. By providing them with good relevant facts now, we hope to make them better informed and safer drivers.'

The programme opens with a 'sit down and be shocked' presentation by Cascade Theatre in Education who will be reconstructing real life events. This will be followed by a series of workshops, run by the Road Safety Unit, the Police, A&E consultants, driving instructors and the Health Promotions service.

As a result of these programmes, long-term evaluation will be used to establish if there are any significant reductions in road traffic collisions within the 17-24 year age group, at a local and county level.

Super learners

at the college

YEAR eight pupils from Callington community college took part in a series of 'brain friendly' workshops, ranging from story-telling to outdoor education problem solving yesterday.

This was during a second 'Super Learning Day' at the college. Callington is one of a number of secondary schools in Cornwall taking part in the University of the First Age partnership aimed at boosting learning potential and raising pupils' achievements, motivation and aspirations. The project in Cornwall involves a partnership between the University of the First Age national project, the School Development Service, Cornwall Outdoors, the Cornwall Learning Forum and the Camborne, Pool and Redruth Success Zone. It wishes to encourage youngsters to believe in themselves as 'super learners'.

For yesterday Callington teachers Jonathan Plunkett and Carolyn Dickson devised a series of 15 workshops for the pupils, and there were lectures on how the brain and memory work.

New Kids Club is

launched in Dimson

There will be crafts, construction, board games and competitions for the children with the added bonus of being able to feed the club animals and groom the ponies on the five acre smallholding. For more information on the club telephone Bo or Patricia on 01822 832900.

Units planned

for businesses

AN application to build seven offices and six industrial units on the Moss Side Industrial Estate on the periphery of Callington went before Caradon councillors last night.

The application, by Caradon council, is for Tinners Way.

This part of the estate, and its infrastructure, was developed by the council in l997 when permission was granted for 12 industrial units with construction of sewers and estate roads. The roads and sewers were constructed, but the units remain unbuilt.

The current scheme is for seven offices and six industrial units within one building.

It is intended that this will provide a mixture of small office and workshop units to cater for small scale business.

Officers have recommended approval, subject to consideration of any outstanding consultation responses.
