Red Nose Day

CALLINGTON Drama and Arts Society (Prim-Raf) is presenting a special Red nose day performance of their pantomime, Robinson Crusoe.

All proceeds will go to the Red Nose Day Appeal. The performance will be held at the Prim-Raf Hall at Biscombe Land in Callington on March 16 at 7.30pm. Admission is £3 by contacting Lynne Davis on 01579 382669.

Raffle tickets for the evening's draw will be on sale as well as refreshments.

Anyone who cannot make the performance on Friday can attend the dress rehearsal on March 11 at 2.30pm where all are welcome. Entry costs £2, and this is also for Comic Relief.

Pastiche are

performing

A CONCERT is being held at Callington Methodist Church on Saturday March 17 at 7.30pm, when guests from 'Pastiche', the singing group from Liskeard will be performing. A collection will be taken for church funds, all are welcome.

Good Companions

THE Good Companions Club held their monthly meeting at the Methodist Church and Hall in Callington. Entertainment was presented by the Plymouth Clarion Choir. The choir entertained for an hour, including two soloists and the conductor's young son who played two pieces on his violin.

Refreshments were served in the hall and the business of the day was dealt with. The next meeting, also the AGM, will be on March 15 at 2pm.

Pancake talk

at the Sisterhood

AT the meeting of Callington United Sisterhood the chair was taken by Mrs Audrey Hope.

Happy Thoughts were read by Carrie Duance on God gave me memories and Vida Pearce spoke on Early Closing. The speaker was Lieutenant M Hyter. Being pancake day she spoke on pancakes and the bread of life.

Pianist was Rena Wooldridge and tea was served by Edie Pridham and Barbara Paynter.

Questions evening

A GUILD meeting was held at Callington Methodist Church, Haye Road last week. The meeting was an 'any questions' evening.

Mr Barry Higgins was in the chair and the panel were Rev J Lonsdale, Mrs Sheila Lightbody, Captain D Swales from the Church Army and Mr C White. They gave their thoughts on a variety of questions.

Mrs A Horsham played and chose hymns and tea and biscuits were served by Mrs J Shaw and Mrs V Pearce.

Beavers visit

lifeboat station

1ST Callington Beavers and Cubs set off to visit the RNLI lifeboat station in Fowey,as a follow up from a talk.

The weather improved during the day for the two groups and they even managed to have a paddle in the sea.

On arrival, they were met by Ted Clark, the Callington representative and Keith, the cox of the lifeboat. The group was split into two to view the inshore and offshore boats and were kept amused and interested as they climbed down ladders and had a go with the wheel.

An unexpected bonus was also had during the trip. The group bumped into Michael Garner, better known as Jeff 'Poison' Pearce from the TV show, 'London's Burning', who was on holiday with his family.

The beavers and cubs presented a cheque for £45 to the RNLI, raised from a bring-and-buy sale a week before.

Holly's baptism

The baptism of Holly Elizabeth Farr took place during the family service at St. Mary's Church on Sunday 4 March. Holly is the fourth daughter of Andrew, the church treasurer, and Nicky, a member of the church music group and a house group leader.

The Rector, the Rev. Robert Oakes presented Charles Harding, St. Mary's organist, with a birthday card and present to mark his becoming of age‚ (for a bus pass). Birthday pens were also distributed to all church members present celebrating March birthdays.

The Rector announced that envelopes (to be returned on Palm Sunday) were available in church for people to make special Lent donations, the contents of which will go to the Farming Community via the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution to help those hardest hit by the foot and mouth outbreak.

Ailsa was speaker

A GUILD meeting was held at Callington Methodist Church, Haye Road this week. The speaker was Mrs Ailsa Weaver who is a matron in charge at St Theresa's Home in Callington. Her talk was on her memories of training and becoming a nurse. Mr Barry Higgins was the chairman and Rev Howard Curnow played and chose the hymns. Tea and biscuits were served by Mrs M Wilkins and Mrs P Pengelly.

Music at School

CALLLINGTON Singers and Callington Primary School, along with the town's band, are joining together for an informal evening and a variety of music performed by the children on Thursday April 5.

The band will be including a drum solo and other favourite pieces.

The evening is free and open to all and will include refreshments.
