Decrease in crime
figures for 2001
POLICE constable Ricky Morris was present at Callington Town Council meeting and brought with him some crime figures for the year from January until the end of February.
In 2000, 49 incidents were reported to the local police and during the same time scale this year that number has decreased to 22.
The 22 incidents include 10 vehicles broken into, one car stolen and one joy rider, three shed type burglaries, three criminal damage, one arson and one assault.
Councillor Gist asked if there was any pattern to the vehicles that were broken into. PC Morris explained that he had been studying the whereabouts of the break-ins and said that there was no particular pattern although there was always vehicle break-ins at Callington New Bridge although it seemed to be sporadic.
Councillor Nettle raised another police matter of people parking outside the Spar shop in Fore Street and blocking the road, which is aggravated by the current situation of the road works and traffic lights.
PC Morris assured the councillors that he would see if police presence could be stepped up at that area to deter people from parking as people tend to begin blocking the road as soon as the traffic warden is off duty.
