SCATS wins
major award
Stoke Climsland Amateur Theatrical Society was delighted to receive news last week that they had been given a major grant of £4,879 by the South West Arts Council under their Awards For All Scheme. The money has been given to enable SCATS to replace its failing lighting and sound systems and to provide a new storage facility for equipment.
Says Chairman of SCATS, Graham Clark - 2 years ago we realised that our lighting and sound equipment had come to the end of its days; likewise, our storage shed was literally falling apart. If SCATS was to go on we needed to replace these, but we hadn't the money to do it. So we decided to apply for a National Lottery Grant, and Secretary Kathryn Clark and Treasurer John Prescott took on the task. The first thing to do was to raise partnership funding, and together with generous donations from local and national organisations, including a substantial donation from His Royal Highness Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall, they raised £1,130. Unfortunately the Lottery application was unsuccessful, and it would have been easy to give up at that stage.
But they learnt of the Awards For All Scheme run by the Arts Council of England, and decided to have another go. They supported us, and this time we met with success. The improvements will first be evident in our next production which is our pantomime - Jack & The Beanstalk on 1, 2, 3, & 10 February - be there!
Deadline at

Art work at
the hospital
ON Monday, students from Callington Primary School travelled to Truro's Royal Cornwall Hospital to see their art work displayed on the walls of the maternity ward and receive a certificate for taking part in a 'copy a classic' competition.
The students whose work is now displayed on the walls of the Royal Cornwall Hospital are Sophie Berriman, Abigail Mitchell, Claire Weeks, Roseanna Holman, Edward Trezise, Paul Hunt, Kimberley Plummer, Yasmin Mullard and Kerry Edwards, who was absent on the day of the visit.
Edward Trezise was the overall winner of the 10 to 11 age group with a self portrait, and was presented with a WH Smith gift voucher by John Dyer, a local artist.
One of the organisers of the competition from the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Karen Stoyles said that they were overwhelmed by the response to the competition and they had received entries from schools all over Cornwall. The main aim of the competition was to find artwork from children, to brighten up the walls of the Princess Alexandra Maternity Wing at the hospital. Karen said: 'It gave our 'Money for
Mums' fund a pleasant boost as we did not expect so many people to come and support the art exhibition.'
