Everest climb

for the Scouts

THE First Callington Scout Group is holding a sponsored event in the Callington Pioneer car park on December 1 and 2, starting at 7.30pm. This will take place outside the Scout headquarters where the scouts will climb the height of Mount Everest, up and down a tower within 24 hours.

The scouts are raising money from local businesses for much needed building repairs and to replace old equipment as they are a voluntary organisation and rely solely on fundraising. All sponsors that help will be advertised on the scaffolding tower during the event.

Callington Scouts meet at the headquarters every Friday from 7pm until 9pm.

Samaritans speak

at Callington Guild

A CALLINGTON guild meeting was held on Monday evening at Callington Methodist Church, Haye Road.

The speakers for the evening were members of the Samaritans. They explained how volunteers are on duty 24 hours a day, every day.

Mrs Elsie Hope was the chair for the meeting and Mr Barry Higgins played and chose the hymns. Tea and biscuits were served by Misses E and R Wooldridge.

The meeting next week will be an overseas missions evening, the speaker will be Miss Jean Ryall.

A tourist

training talk

AT the Callington Rotary Club meeting at The Bulls Head, Callington the President, Bruce Brown, welcomed the speaker, Jo King, who had recently acted as a professional guide to the club when the members toured Plymouth Citadel.

Jo, who holds a language degree and was a teacher, explained the in-depth training required to become a Blue Badge Professional Tourist Guide.

Dating back to The Festival of Britain in 1950, the concept of a professional body was formed and the training involves a 12 month part time course, sponsored by The Regional Tourist Board, including written examinations and a detailed knowledge of a wide variety of subject matter.

Jo said she is frequently involved when cruise ships call at Plymouth, and has served as a Chairlady for the Association of West Country Tourist Guides. Many club members were surprised at the in-depth knowledge required to become a qualified tourist guide, a fact referred to by Past President and Duchy College Head, Steve Parsons, when proposing a vote of thanks.
