CALLINGTON Town Band is combining their skills with those of the Marshside Band from Southport, and soloist Dorothy Culshaw, to present a concert 'Millennium Brass' to be compered by Lieutenant Colonel John Ware OBE of the Royal Marines on October 28 at the Methodist Chapel, Haye Road from 7.30pm.
The concert is being supported by two Callington based businesses, Downderry Construction Group and Selleck Nicholls Ltd.
The Marshside link with Callington arose through Callington Town Band purchasing the previous uniform jackets of Marshside Band, as they could not afford new ones. This link has provided a opportunity for the two bands to combine in concert with members agreeing that the main beneficiary of the evening will be Children's Hospice South West. Admission is by programme, £3, to include interval refreshments, £1.50 from each programme to go the the Hospice.
Marshside band members and their families will be arriving on Thursday October 25 and intend to enjoy a long weekend in Cornwall. The band is based at the North end of Southport in the old fishing community of the same name. In brass banding terms, Southport's most famous citizen is William Rimmer, composer, conductor and arranger of many pieces still played today. He conducted the band from time to time and taught some of the original band members.
Soprano soloist Dorothy Culshaw made her singing debut at the age of seven and success followed at music festivals and Methodist Church Eisteddfods.
Lieutenant Ware, was born and bought up in Plymouth from where he joined the Royal Marines Band Service as junior musician. John was awarded the OBE for services to music in 1993 and retired from the Royal Marines in 1994.
Programmes for the evening are available from Callington Town Hall, band secretary, Bryan Barber on 01579 383474, any band member or at the door.
