Sunday School
The St Mary's Church Sunday School Children are delighted that sales of their annual magazine raised over £100. The money will be sent to the Rokon Bush Primary School in Southern Sudan, to purchase stationary supplies and food. Thank you to all who contributed.
Women's Fellowship
It was an afternoon of DIY for the St. Mary's Church Women's Fellowship when they met on Monday, 11th September.
With no speaker booked the afternoon's entertainment was provided by members Margaret Rubery, Barbara Clayton, Marion Mayall, Yvonne Hill and Mary Gardner in the form of quizzes, poems and other readings. Quiz winners were Susan Oakes, Celia Wilkinson and Barbara Clayton.
Members were also asked for their pet hates and it was unaminously agreed that the state of toilets for the use of the public left room for much improvement. Having celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Fellowship this year Margaret Rubery reminded the members of the items provided by them over these 10 years which amounted to a total cost of £1251.
Volunteers were asked for to provide refreshments on Honey Fair Day, 4th October, in St. Mary's Church. Members were reminded of the Fellowship Communion on Wednesday 27th September at St. Mary's.
Evening of praise
An evening of Christian Praise was arranged by Christians Together in Callington and held at the Mustard Seed Evangelical Church on Sunday 10th September.
A full church enjoyed singing songs of praise accompanied by Kenneth Pethick on the piano, the Mustard Seed Music Group and the Mustard Seed Singers. The compere was Alan Libby who also played the guitar.
The evening also included a testimony and readings. A retiring offertory resulted in £98 being sent to Tear Fund to help with its work overseas. The evening ended with refreshments and fellowship.
Youth Group
DNT - no smoke, no lights, no loud music this time, just prayer, reflection and worship the youth way. A dance routine, sketch and reading took the congregation to the worship songs led by Richard Parker with Jane Plackett on piano.
The members of the Youth Group who had attended the Message 2000 project in Manchester during the summer holidays then showed slides of the event together with a commentary on their experiences.
Dominic Whitting led prayers for the continuation of the work begun by young people in Manchester and for the work our young people hope to do in their own town of Callington.
Indian restaurant
for town centre
CALLINGTON is to have its second Indian restaurant after Caradon Council planners gave the go-ahead for one to open in New Road.
But another application which would have seen a third Indian food outlet in the town was turned down by the same committee.
Members heard that Mr Graham Astbury, who owns Astbury Travel next to the proposed restaurant objected to the New Road plan on the grounds that it would create a large amount of litter and the smell would affect businesses in the area.
Caradon environmental health officials had, however, raised no objections and planning officers considered the town centre location appropriate.
They said the privacy and amenity of adjoining properties would be protected by conditions attached to any approval.
Approval was given to Mr Hasmat to open in New Road in what is at the moment an empty building.
The second application was from Mr Ullah who wanted to open his restaurant and takeaway in Fore Street. Again Caradon officers had recommended the application should be approved but councillors thought otherwise.
Mrs Kath Pascoe, the local Caradon member, said the road was narrow with double yellow lines and the premises was close to traffic lights on a busy junction. There was no back entrance and the buidling was near houses.
Members agreed and refused the application for the second time.
Quiz for
music stands
AFTER a quiz was organised by four Year Five pupils from Callington Primary School - Anna Pascoe, Jamie Rowlands, Holly Cornbill and Katherine Collard - a total of £56 was raised to buy new music stands.
The pupils set and asked the questions and organised various other activities including a raffle, refreshments and prizes for all who entered.

Healthy cooking
IT was the third year in a row for the cookery summer school at Callington Community College when technology teacher Margaret Singleton led a week long summer school for budding chefs.
With the brief to cook and eat healthily the chefs took to their tasks with enthusiasm.
Over 100 students attended the course during the week and all were delighted with the outcome.
