Work completed on clubhouse

Work has been completed on Callington Bowling Club clubhouse on the building of a ramp and double doors to provide access for the disabled. This was funded by a grant of almost £5000 from the Millennium 'Awards for All' Sports Commission.

The season was officially opened on Saturday April 15 by Kath Pascoe, with Tony Nettles bowling the first wood.

Founded in 1948 the club became affiliated to the English Bowling Association, the Cornwall Bowling Association and the East Cornwall Bowling League in 1951.

Since the completion of the new clubhouse, started in 1990, the club has continued to make progress, with over 60 members taking part in a full league programme in the summer and a busy short mat programme over the winter months.

New members are always welcome and the club is open every Friday evening from 6pm to introduce new players to the game. Bowls can be provided, so all that is required is a pair of flat shoes. Further information is available from the club secretary, Roy Lane, on 01579 384478.

The day was started with a car boot sale, and included local organisations, ranging from the Callington Murals project and the Guides and Brownies to the WI and New Outlook. Guests also had the opportunity to view plans for the Callington of the future and see just what impact the monies from the Tamar valley Regeneration project will soon be having on the town centre in Callington.

In the afternoon the college was host to three sports fixtures: The Callington Colts were playing at home, Callington Rugby club were playing a touring side from Bury Hill in Gloucestershire and the Callington Town Second XI were involved in an exciting cup game.
