Drop-In centre for under 25s

Starting today (January 7) the Youth Service will be offering a new facility for the under 25s in the Callington area.

During Monday and Friday lunchtimes sessions a drop-in centre will be open for young people to relax, watch television or videos, listen to music or have a coffee or tea and a snack.

The centre will offer informal advice and information from youth workers, employment and careers information from the careers office, help with applying for jobs and writing Curriculum Vitaes (CV) and advice on independent accommodation benefits. All young people under 25 will be welcome to attend between 12 and 2pm Monday and Friday lunchtimes Callington Youth Centre Coffee Bar, Liskeard Road.

The centre will also welcome anyone in the community who is interested in becoming a voluntary helper. More information is available from Gillian Mann on 01579 387594.

Maintenance closes the hall

Due to essential maintenance of Callington sports hall DC Leisure has closed the hall from January 6 until January 16, but other facilities at the centre will remain open.

The closure means Caradon council's Recreation Development team has postponed the Caradon Open badminton tournament due to run on January 8 and January 15. The tournament has been re-scheduled to March 11 from 2-6pm for the under 15s and under 18s, closing dates for entries, being March 10, and March 18 from 2-6pm for the under 11s and Under 13s, the closing date for this being March 17. The entry fee is £2 for singles and £2 for doubles (£1 each).

For further details and an application form contact Phil Brown, Assistant Recreation Development Officer, Caradon council, tel 01579 341026.

Companions' festive tea

Members of the Good Companions in Callington held their Christmas tea recently. Special guests were Callington Portreeve, Peter Hambly and his wife Diana.

The afternoon opened with a short prayer by the chairman. Entertainment followed with an arrangement of songs by the primary school choir. The raffle was then called with many prizes on offer, and thanks went to Margaret who recited two Christmas poems. Members then enjoyed a tea served by the caterers, Judith and Allison.

Tea dancing

Callington Tea Dance Club held their Christmas tea dance recently with dancing was to the music of Albert and Mavis Hurlock from Saltash.

The Portreeve, Peter Hambly and his wife Diane made the draw and led the dancers off with a waltz.

The Portreeve also auctioned a doll which made £30 for the charity Heartswell South West.

On January 15 at 8pm until 11.30pm a Millennium dance is being held, including a pasty supper with tea or coffee. The overall price of the evening is £3.

Rock night

A rock night is being held at Callington Community College on Saturday, January 15 at 7.30pm.

The bands 'Chalk', from Callington College and 'Mets' from Stoke Climsland School will be playing music from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s during the evening, raising money for both the schools PTAs.

There will be a licensed bar open during the evening; in advance tickets cost £2 individually and £4 for a family ticket, on the door £2.50 and £5 respectively
