WORK which will give new life to the South Crofty tin and copper mine in Cornwall is progressing well, says the company behind the project.

The mine, which dates back to 1592, was the last tin mine to close in Cornwall – in 1998, after metal prices fell.

Now tin, which is used as a solder in electronics, is set for a comeback.

Vancouver-based Strongbow Exploration has a mining licence for the site, valid until 2071, and has planning permission to build a new processing facility and water treatment plant.

The company has reported on how preparations are going regarding reopening the mine in the Camborne area. Over the summer, a mains water pipe was diverted and historical mine workings were capped to enable the groundworks for the mine water treatment plant to begin. They are now complete, ready for concrete to be poured and plant construction to commence.

Production at the mine is planned to recommence in 2021 which could lead to employment for over 200 people.
