Cornwall Senior Cup Third Round
St Stephens Boro 1
Callington Tn 5
Players from both sides observed a min-ute's silence before this match for Saltash soldier Richard 'Robbo' Robinson, who was killed in Afghanistan.
Borough manager Steve Brown admitted: 'It's very sad because many of the lads knew Robbo very well and it's good that they can show their respects.'
St Stephens can now get back to the task of winning promotion from the East Cornwall Premier League Division One after their remarkable Cornwall Senior Cup run came to end in front of a good-sized crowd at the Salt Mill.
The Saltash-based club – who had recorded a 3-2 victory over South West Peninsula League side St Blazey – in the last round found local rivals Callington a different prospect. The visitors quickly went on the attack, with good efforts on goal being made by Ryan Lucassi, Ryan McClements and Matt Green, the latter forcing a superb save from goalkeeper Tom Hemmett.
Keeping up the pressure, Callington took the lead when teenage striker Matt Shipton stooped to head home a John Wyatt corner.
Hemmett was kept busy to deny Lucassi with another two saves before a superb Dave Wilkinson goal drew the teams level.
Wilkinson's effort on goal was well saved by goalkeeper Dan Johnson but, from the resultant Marc Hosking corner, Wilkinson's spectacular overhead kick flew into the far corner of the net.
The game was virtually sealed five minutes later when Wyatt worked his way into a shooting chance to curl a great shot past Hemmett, and in time-added-on McClements found the back of the net through a 20-yard free-kick.
The home side kept in the game until the 62nd minute, when McClements found the back of the net with another stunning free-kick. Callington completed their good afternoon's work when a Lee Beer cross found Lucassi at the far post and his powerful header flew into the roof of the net.
Borough boss Brown was gracious in defeat, saying: 'I would say congratulations to Callington.
'We always knew it was going to be extremely difficult to replicate what we did against St Blazey, particularly with four key players out.
'Callington taught us that if you make basic mistakes at this level you get punished, which we did.
'The players gave everything they had and did themselves proud. Reaching the third round of the Cup in our first season as a senior team has helped raise the profile of the club and was a good learning experience for players.
'I would like to wish Callington the best of luck in the next round.'
