THE family and supporters of a brave seven-year-old who has been fighting cancer for the last three years have given £12,000 to a specialist centre. The donation to the Merlin MS Centre, near St Austell, has come from Erin's Fund for Life. This charity was started by Esther and Jonathan Lewsey, from Liskeard, to help them fund alternative treatments to fight the cancer suffered by their daughter Erin. The couple believe that the oxygen treatment Erin has been receiving at the centre has made a significant contribution to her recovery. With the money from Erin's Fund for Life, the centre has been able to buy a third oxygen chamber, which Erin officially opened this week. It has been painted to her design to look like a yellow submarine and is to be called Erin's Chamber. Erin, a pupil at Liskeard's Hillfort Primary School, was diagnosed with cancer, in the form of a Wilm's tumour in her right kidney when she was four. The kidney was removed but the cancer progressed to her lungs and her survival chances were rated at only 20 to 40 per cent. Hearing this, Jonathan and Esther commenced extensive research into the alternative treatments available. This led to Erin being put on a special diet and to the oxygen therapy treatment. In April, Erin was given a scan which showed her lungs were still clear, with no recurrence of the disease. 'Words simply cannot describe the relief we feel as parents every time we get a clear scan. We remain positive in our outlook, as does Erin, who takes it all in her stride,' said Jonathan and Esther. 'We were staggered by the response to the fundraising to fund Erin's treatments, and it has long been our intention to find a way in which to invest a portion of the funds for the benefit of all children suffering from cancer in the South West. We believe that in the Merlin MS Centre, we have found an ideal partner, and we are delighted to be donating an oxygen chamber.'
