Premier Division Callington Town were un-ceremoniously dumped out of the Knockout Cup by Second Division Lostwithiel on Saturday after shipping five goals in an incredible last fifteen minutes on a pitch that more resembled a battle field than a playing surface.
Despite putting pressure on the local authority, Lostwithiel have no protection to give the playing surface which seemed to be used by all and sundry during the week and it showed as the playing surface was on the verge of being dangerous for both sides. Playing any sort of football was almost impossible and it was no surprise that there was no score at half time as both teams found it impossible to control the ball.
With five minutes gone of the second period though, the game did come to life. Peter Wrack had the chance to put the home side ahead from the penalty spot but his kick was brilliantly saved by Town Player Manager Paul Blatchford. It seemed as though things were going even better for Callington when, shortly afterwards, Simon Hunt rose to head home a corner to give them the lead.
Then with 20 minutes left, Callington were two up with another headed goal and the game looked won. But Lostwithiel had other ideas as they hit Town with five goals in 15 amazing minutes to grab the spoils. Lee Couch, a second half substitution weighed in with a hat trick while Wrack scored the other two to leave Callington's hope of silverware in this competition in shatters.
