Second in the Division Two table Padstow arrived with 24 points from 10 games to provide the opposition for Gunnislake who, with 23 points from nine matches, were occupying third place.

The visitors started brightly and had the better of the opening 15 minutes. However, Andy Woodward was only called into action once and he dealt with the save required comfortably. This was to prove the only meaningful contribution from Woodward as Gunnislake once again defended well as a team.

As the first half progressed, despite playing into a strong wind, Gunnislake gradually took a grip of this encounter and reached the interval with a one goal lead. The goal came when Wayne Thialmann played in Paul Tomkins and the young striker showed real composure as he neatly slotted past the Padstow keeper.

In the second half the home side took advantage of the elements and played, at times, some good football. A number of chances were created and three of these were converted. Firstly, a Neil Kinger corner was headed into his own net by a visiting player. Goal number three came when Tomkins again finished well when running into a Simon Wakeham defensive clearance. The scoring was completed when Mark Yeoman found the target.

This result saw Gunnislake take over top spot, for the first time, on goal difference moving above a Southgate side who have played five more fixtures than Gunnislake.
