Tideford entertained St Stephens in what proved to be an old fashioned 'Cornish Battle' with neither side giving an inch. It was as though Polyne Garage sponsored Tideford had something to prove after their uncharacteristic 8-0 drubbing at the hands of St Stephen back in December.
In a goalless first half Tideford started by playing the better of the football but gradually St Stephens began to take charge of the midfield, and only a brilliant diving save at the feet of the attacking forwards from Bernie Pearson in the Tideford goal kept the visitors from taking the lead just before the interval.
A good run and shot from Wayne Kirby just after he had beaten three defenders almost brought a goal for Tideford, but it was well saved by the visiting keeper.
Eventually a lack of communication in the otherwise sound Tideford defence let in S Masters to open the scoring for St Stephens. It was not long however before a corner by Andy Parker levelled the score after the keeper deflected the ball into his own net.
From the restart St Stephens scored again through Anthony Tucker. This was followed by a free kick from Dave Neville which David Beckham would have been proud of. It made the score 3-1. However Tideford refused to lie down and fought back, and towards the end were awarded a penalty for a goal mouth infringement. Although Mark Bates initial thunderbolt was saved, the keeper could not hold on to the ball and Mark Bates reduced the lead from the rebound.
At this stage the proceedings became somewhat heated as Tideford battled to salvage something from the game, but overall St Stephens just about deserved to clinch a one goal victory because of their more positive attitude in front of goal.
