Lanreath.........................................1

Callington...................................5

CALLINGTON came into this game off the back of two recent defeats and knew they had to put things right in this Premier encounter. With a couple of players failing to turn up, manager Paul Blatchford had to reshuffle positions just before kick off. New signings from Tavistock, Nick Monk and Shaun Reid both started for town as did young Kevin Blatchford and they settled into the game straight away.

It only took two minutes for Monk to get on the score sheet following a corner from Griffith. The ball fell to him 12 yards out and he made no mistake picking out the bottom right corner. Callington were well on top and 10 minutes later his strike partner Bradley netted Callington's second calmly rounding the keeper and tapping in from six yards.

Lanreath pressed when they could but most of their efforts were restricted to long range, until a mix up involving the Town keeper allowed Swift to score

From that point Callington pressed again, and from Brooks corner Bradley powered his header in to the top corner to restore Callington's two goal lead and take them into the break 3-1.

In the second period again it was the away side who enjoyed most of the possession with Brooks and Payne taking control and young Kevin Blatchford wide left, starting to run at the Lanreath defence. Callington were starting to create more of the chances, with Monk going close on a couple of occasions.

Griffith had a shot well saved by the keeper as did Nick Tilbury, Taylor was also starting to cause problems down the right and in the space of 10 minutes wrapped the game up. Sub Ashley Rowland scored a fine solo goal from an acute angle and he bagged his second minutes later with a tap in from five yards. The Town defence stayed solid for the remaining of the game and thoroughly deserved a well earnt win.

Star man - Kevin Blatchford.

Division Two

Saints triumph

St Cleer............................................1

Camelford.....................................0

ST CLEER got back to winning ways with a hard working display in an evenly contested match against Camelford, determined not to allow a repeat of the inept performance in the away fixture earlier on this season. They duly came away with a win to claim three valuable points, with a goal from Truckle in the 24th minute.

Saints started the stronger getting their flowing game moving and going close on several occasions while holding firm at the back. The goal when it came was the product of some good work on the right by Andrew whose cross was met by Taylor. He beat the keeper only to see his shot hit the upright, but Truckle following up was on hand to tap the ball over the line to put the home team in front.

St Cleer continued to threaten to increase their lead prior to the break but the visitors thwarted their efforts, before coming back with a vengeance after the break, and for lengthy periods the home team were pressed back as the visitors pressurised in an attempt to get the equaliser. The nearest they came however was when a long range lob, (there is some debate as to whether it was a shot from Camelford or a wayward back pass), caught Duffey off his line with the ball flying just over the crossbar, while at the other end Taylor went close before Coleflax brought out the best in the visiting keeper with a controlled lob which would have found the top corner but for the keeper's height.

King seals win

Polperro Reserves...................4

St Giles on the Heath.............2

AFTER a poor performance last week, Polperro were glad of another tough fixture to concentrate on and went into this top of the table clash with a point to prove.

The opening exchanges reinforced the view that these are two evenly matched teams, and there were chances at both ends early on. However, it was the home side who took an early lead when Matt King squeezed home a loose ball from a corner.

St Giles responded immediately when their lone striker out paced Polperro's defence and chipped over the advancing keeper. The visitors extended their lead soon after, when they scored from a seemingly offside position. It was not, however, one-way traffic and Polperro had chances from Matt King and Mark Pengelly to restore their lead. A combination of good goalkeeping and bad luck saw them go into the break 2-1 down.

Stern words from Polperro's senior players saw a determined start to the second half, and this was a period which saw one of the home sides best goals of the season, when Matt Pengelly won a tackle in his own area and found Martin Hamlet, nothing seemed on but Rob Bilsborough and Del Palfrey moved the ball upfield to matt King, and his fine cross was met with a great far post header from Mark Pengelly.

This lifted the home team and from the resulting kick-off. Mark Pengelly robbed a defender of the ball and raced through to score a fine individual goal.

The expected onslaught from St Giles failed to materialise and Polperro sealed victory with a deserved strike from the hardworking King. Another fine all round team performance, but notable performances from Del Palfrey and Aaron Spry in midfield, who were often out numbered but never over-run or out-fought, and from Pengelly and King in attack.

However, Man of the Match went to Jamie Rich, for a solid defensive display, and some highly dubious good celebrations.

North Hill......................................3

St Dominic Reserves.................1

NORTH Hill took the lead in the second minute when Daniel Loftus converted an Adrian Parsons cross. Loftus playing in his first full match for North Hill in place of injured Peter George was continually making a nuisance of himself to the St Dominic defence. North Hill went further ahead when the ever improving Gareth Smith converted a corner taken by Martin Bloomfield.

St Dominic playing a standard of football belying their lowly position in the league pulled back when Phil Hones reacted first from a right wing corner. Parsons went through on his own in the 65th minute, he very rarely misses these, and duly obliged again.

Knockout Cup

Polatch hat-trick

Chillaton.......................................3

Dobwalls........................................7

DOBWALLS made the long trek into Devon for this delayed cup tie. The game was played at Lewdown on the smallest pitch the visitors had ever come across. Both 'keepers could reach the other end of the pitch with ease.

With very little space the premier side were frustrated for most of the first half and were unable to open their account until just before the break. Martin Polatch had a shot that appeared well over the line, however, the unsighted referee let play continue and as the ball was partially cleared Gordon Moxham made no mistake with a fierce volley.

From the kick off Dobwalls regained possession, a through ball that was heading for defender took a wicked deflection off the uneven surface into the path of 'Goal Machine' Martin Polatch who chested the ball past the bemused defender and calmly beat the advancing keeper.

The second half produced a lot more action with the visitors playing up the slope with a two goal cushion and feeling confident that the game was all but sewn up. Unfortunately they were brought back down to earth when a long kick from the home keeper caused confusion between Roberts in the Dobwalls goal and defender Martin Jordan, an alert attacker nipped in between them to lob the stranded keeper.

Their joy was short lived as straight from the kick off Dobwalls scored when Scott Brown hit a screamer of a shot from well outside the box into the top corner. Goals from Rob Cole and Andy Sheer gave them a four goal cushion. Chillaton reduced the arrears when another long punt was misjudged by Jordan to allow the centre forward to score.

Martin Polatch made it six with his second goal of the game. For the third time Chillaton scored from a kick from their keeper that beat the defence for their centre forward to make no mistake. Just before the end Martin Polatch completed his hat-trick to finalise the scoring and deserved his Man of the Match award. The home side made the most of the limited space and their keeper made a number of outstanding saves to keep the score respectable.

Probus...............................................1

Gunnislake....................................7

LEE Underwood celebrated the birth of his second child during the week leading up to this fixture by grabbing two goals as Gunnislake safely progressed against their lower division opponents.

Due to last minute work commitments keeper Andy Underwood joined Andy Southcott as being unavailable. Defender Mark Southcott donned the goalkeeping duties and had a more than competent match.

Underwood's fellow attackers Andy Wakem and Paul Tomkins also found the target twice. Steve Gaggini continued his tendency to break from midfield and got on the scoreboard to complete the seven goal haul.

This Saturday sees Gunnislake play Southgate in the second round of this competition at Gunnislake with a 2:00pm kick off.

League ditch

Divisional cup

THE Duchy Football League Management Committee decided at their recent meeting to cancel the Divisional Cup for the season, League Secretary Mike Newcombe reported to the committee that nearly 200 games have been lost to the weather this season. Although there has been a recent improvement, none of the divisions had reached the halfway stage, and some clubs faced a very serious backlog. Fixtures Secretary, Colin Atkins was faced with a mammoth task to re-arrange the games, and many clubs faced three games a week once the light evenings arrive.

Faced with these statistics the committee were left with little alternative, but to regrettably cancel the competitions, although they appreciate many clubs will be disappointed with this decision. Another consideration the Management Committee had to take into account was the probable shortage of referees available, with the situation in all leagues the same.

The committee also sanctioned a name change for Nanstallon F.C. who will now be called Bugle Orient F.C. and will play their fixtures at Molinnis Park, Bugle.

Launceston Knockout Cup

North Hill beat Southgate in penalty shootout

ON Sunday North Hill were away to Southgate A in the Launceston Knockout Cup, this being a team four divisions higher than the lowly fourth division North Hill. It was played on a very soggy and slippery pitch with North Hill taking the lead in the 11th minute when Russell Pugsley pounced on a half chance.

The rest of the half and indeed most of the second half was an end to end affair with neither team looking likely to score again. However Southgate got a deserved equaliser with eight minutes to go. North Hill had to thank Daniel Sharp and man of the match Gareth Smith in the middle of the defence for their continual hard work. Strong in midfield were Richard Robson and Martin Bloomfield who battled relentless throughout the game.

Extra time continued in the same fashion and the game was finally settled in a penalty shoot out with North Hill being the victors by the odd penalty. This reflected how close it was throughout.
