Liskeard Ath 4 Newquay 1
The Blues ended a run of three games without a victory with a well deserved success over a hard working Peppermints side at Lux Park. With a number of players missing, through illness and suspension, the visitors started at a tremendous pace and in the first 25 minutes put the home side under enormous pressure. The opening goal of the game was no more than the Peppermints deserved after great work on the left flank by Andy Birt set up Jake Hartigan to curl in a tremendous shot with the outside of his foot that keeper Simon Zinn did well to get a hand to. The Blues appeared shell shocked as Newquay continued to press and almost immediately could have found themselves two down as Sam McKune outpaced the home defence to reach a long ball over the top but could only find the side netting with his final shot. It was against the run of play that Liskeard levelled on 25 minutes when Jamie Morrison-Hill released Dominic Richardson down the left. The ex-Argyle striker cut in and unleashed a shot which keeper Scott Palmer did well to parry but only into the path of Lee Harvey who gratefully smashed the ball into an unguarded net. The goal appeared to be the shot in the arm that Liskeard needed as they surged into the lead in the 35th minute. The Peppermints defence failed to clear a Morrison-Hill corner and Richardson's shot, from the edge of the box to ricocheted around the area before falling for Paul Baker to stab ball home from three yards. Liskeard could have gone in at half time with a clear lead when a goal kick from Palmer fell straight to Harvey who bore down on goal only for Palmer to recover in time to make a great save. The second half saw the Blues, playing down the slope, take control of the game which became almost one-way traffic. The home side spurned a host of chances before the Newquay defence was finally breached for a for a third goal 20 minutes from time. An intricate move on the right involving Jamie Morrison-Hill, Karl Curtis and Kevin Mee saw the latter sending in a teasing cross which the visitors defence failed to deal with, leaving Paul Baker to fire home an unstoppable shot from 12 yards. Liskeard continued to pin back Newquay, who were left to rely on breakaways but the result was assured five minutes from time. Matt Hawke met another Morrison-Hill corner and his header just crept across the line despite the desperate efforts of the Newquay defence.
