St Blazey 2 Liskeard Ath 1
The Green and Blacks quest for a record-breaking fifth consecutive Carlsberg South Western League championship is in their own hands after this victory at Blaise Park on Wednesday. Blazey fans were in despondent mood after Monday's home defeat by second-placed Bodmin Town but they were the ones smiling after the final whistle on Wednesday as the news emerged that Bodmin had lost 2-1 at Truro. This leaves Blazey six points ahead, with a superior goal difference, of both Bodmin and Millbrook with seven games to play. St Blazey only needed four minutes to ease their nerves as Paul Madden's cross was helped on by Dan Bulley for Ian Gosling to head home. Liskeard were unfortunate after 13 minutes when Dominic Richardson turned sharply in the area to unleash a low drive, through a forest of legs, which Martin Quantick brilliantly turned on to his upright. A second Blazey goal followed 20 minutes later as Mark Vercesi was left unmarked to head home Gosling's right-wing free kick from six yards. The home side enjoyed much the better of the first half but Liskeard changed formation for the second half and were a much-improved side. They reduced the arrears seven minutes after the break as Blazey's debutant goalkeeper Quantick rushed out of his goal in a vain attempt to intercept Matt Penry's through ball but was left in no-man's land as John James took the chance to walk the ball into an empty net. Liskeard dominated the play from that point on and on another day might have had a deserved equaliser but it was not to be. Liskeard's frustration was evident at the final whistle when substitute Lee Harvey received his second yellow card of the game.
