Musicians based at HMS Raleigh in Torpoint are among service personnel who have gone to the Philippines to provide emergency relief in the wake of the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan.

A total of 14 musicians from the Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines were deployed on board the destroyer, HMS Daring, which was diverted to the Philippines as part of the major British response to the natural disaster.

The musicians include Band Colour Sergeant Andy Wainwright who lives in Torpoint.

Speaking before the ship arrived in the Philippines, the 39-year-old said: 'The last thing we were expecting was to be told we were going to a humanitarian disaster as part of the ship's company to offer our services.

'There is a lot of trepidation on board.'

But he added: 'I think we will adapt to the situation quite well and will be able to offer our skills where needed.'

Among those responding locally to the emergency situation have been staff and students at saltash.net community school.

'Everyone was affected by the upsetting images being shown on national media,' said headteacher Isobel Bryce.

'We just felt we had to do something as quickly as possible to help provide support for this humanitarian crisis.'

Staff and students dressed up in their onesies for a non-uniform day and there was also a cake sale.

Meanwhile, Year 9 students helped to organise a penalty shoot-out with a 'beat the teacher' competition and there were fundraising stalls as well.

In addition, donations came in from parents and other community members, helping to raise a total of £1,675.64.

Staff member Vicky Higgs said: 'The students have shown great compassion to the people of the Philippines.'
