TOMORROW sees the start of the big clean-up weekend and makeover of Liskeard's Fore Street by more than 100 volunteers, under the direction of Queen of Shops Mary Portas, who has vowed to be in the town with her sleeves rolled up ready for work.

The operation, controlled by project managers Mace, has been  planned for several months, in conjunction with Yellow Door, Mary's marketing retail company, and is one of her visions to help regenerate the town centre.

At the public meeting she called in August, attended by more than 200 people, she said: 'We are going to have a big clean-up weekend. The town needs a bit of TLC.'

Volunteers will be weeding, scrubbing, repairing, painting and planting in Fore Street.

Cornwall councillor Jan Powell, who is co-ordinating the volunteers as a member of the Town Team, has asked that everyone meets in Fore Street at 9.30am and not at the Methodist Church as previously organised.

The town council's fortnightly  market on The Parade is also taking place tomorrow and there will be £1 all-day car parking.
