A new £4m 999 complex could be built in Liskeard. Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, Devon and Cornwall Police and the South West Ambulance Trust this week applied to the Department of Communities and Local Government Transformation Funding Programme for cash to build a modern complex for all three emergency services. The 999 Tri Service Project centre would be developed at Luxstowe, near the town centre, where the services presently operate from separate units. The project has been designed to maximise collaboration and integration across the 999 services. Geoff Brown, Cornwall Council cabinet member for Homes and Communities, said: 'This is a very exciting proposal. The hub would create significant opportunities for joint training and sharing of information. 'It is fair to say that having a single focal point for the emergency services provides local communities with a feeling of wraparound security.' Insp Dan Ivey, sector manager for the police in the Caradon area, said: 'The current police station at Liskeard was built in the early 1960s and is no longer fit for purpose. 'This bid demonstrates our collective commitment to maintaining services in rural areas while trying to achieve sustainable cost savings. 'I am really excited about the prospect of what will effectively become a new joint emergency services headquarters for the district.' Liskeard mayor Phil Seeva said: 'I am delighted to see the emergency services are thinking in such an imaginative way which would allow us to preserve them for the town and surrounding area.' In a joint statement, the Liskeard Cornwall councillors, Roger Holmes, Sally Hawken and Mike George, said: 'We are pleased to have been involved in this innovative bid. 'It's great to see additional community benefit built in alongside the blue light services working together.' Paul Walker, deputy chief fire officer and head of community safety, said that the exciting proposal would also provide a wonderful opportunity for greater community engagement and a joined-up approach to a wider safety agenda. However, he said it should be remembered that the detailed bid has gone to what will be an oversubscribed pot of central government funding. 'I am hopeful our bid for this tri- service facility in Liskeard will qualify,' he said. The result of the bid should be known in November.
