Callington v Camborne

AFTER a week of heavy rain, it was a brave decision by Jim Shorten to make Camborne travel, and it was no surprise when the start was delayed to 3.30pm and the game reduced to 33 overs a side.

However, there was no happy ending for Shorten as his side went down by 14 runs.

Martin Jenkin won the toss for the visitors and raised a few eyebrows when he decided to bat first on a waterlogged track.

The Camborne innings was built around Kevin Roberts, who batted throughout and scored a steady 45 from 95 deliveries.

Jenkin himself made 20, but after that, only Gary Stephens could register a double-figure score.

The Callington bowlers all bowled accurately, but it was medium pace swing bowler Chris Bennett who took the plaudits with excellent figures of six for 32 from his nine overs.

The Camborne total of 125 for eight was a challenging score from 33 overs, but one that Callington would expect to chase.

Unfortunately, the Callington opening batsmen allowed themselves to get bogged down against the seam attack of Dan Stephens and the evergreen Paul Berryman.

After 12 overs, the score was 23 for one and the required run rate was increasing.

Disaster then struck between overs 17 and 20, when Callington lost Jon Parsons, Dan Davis, Andy Shorten and Peter Tancock to reduce them to 43 for five, and the target looked a million miles away.

Jim Shorten gave the supporters some hope with a knock of 28, and Sanjaya Rajapakse fired a quick 26 against the off-spin of Scott Harris, but it was not to be and the Callington reply came to an end with four balls remaining in the last over and the home side still 14 runs short.

Jenkin was the main wicket taker with five for 25, and Harris took three for 25.

Gorran v Wadebridge

GORRAN tied with their visitors in a thrilling match played in a sporting fashion.

Put into bat by Wadebridge, Gorran found runs hard to come by on a damp wicket.

By the fifth over, they had lost two wickets, but New Zealander Craig Davies, on his 21st birthday, provided strong resistance.

His compatriot, Dan Laming, was caught behind for 16 when he appeared set for a big score, allowing Jack Bray-Smith to join Davies.

Their partnership added 55 runs before the Kiwi was caught behind for 45, and soon after, Bray-Smith was bowled for 29 in the 34th over to bring the score to 142 for six.

James Tomlinson added 13, which included his 'regulation' towering six, but it was skipper Chris Lovell, dropping himself down the order to avoid aggravating his back problems, who held the lower order together, and added an unbeaten 20 runs which included a six over the pavilion.

The innings closed with seven balls to spare.

Wadebridge bowler Dave Dunnett put in his standard effective performance, taking four wickets for 44 runs, and left-arm spinner Paul Menhenick grabbed two for 29.

The Wadebridge innings followed much the same pattern as their hosts, and the scores were almost identical after 24 overs.

Partnerships of 51 between Paul Menhenick (34) and Matt Gilbert (36) and of 45 between Neil Richards (32) and Gyles Reynolds (11) appeared to give Wadebridge the upper hand, but from 145 for five they were reduced to 149 for seven in three overs.

Ross Keast (12) and Pete Dingle (14) brought Wadebridge nearer the score.

But when Laming began the 48th over, Wadebridge had nine wickets down and still required three to win.

Reuben Turner took a single from the second ball, bringing Dunnett to face Laming.

The next three balls produced no runs, but somehow the last pair managed to scramble a single off the last ball to tie the match.

Laming put in a match-saving performance to take three for 17, while Davies claimed two for 27 and Tomlinson two for 40.

It was an exciting game, with fluctuating fortunes, and played throughout in good spirit by both teams.

Gorran have only themselves to blame that they could not claim maximum points, but whilst their ground fielding was very good, their catching was poor, with at least another five 'regulation' catches going to ground.
