IT was a disappointing weekend for Luckett who, after losing to Redruth on Saturday, went down in their rearranged home game against Penzance on Sunday. Put into bat by Penzance, Luckett made a poor start and lost four wickets with only 67 on the board. Notable scorers were Andy Brenton, who made 30, and Paul Clements, who played a watchful game as he helped the tail to a reasonable score. His wicket fell with the score on 149 for a hard- worked 44 and the lower order batsmen helped the total to 193 for eight, with John Schuttkacker making 26, Ian Clements 36 and Steve Gold 17 not out. Luckett, however, went to tea knowing they were 30 or 40 runs short on Luckett's fast outfield as was proven later in the match. After losing a quick wicket Penzance, were always in the driving seat and the winning runs cames in the 42nd over. Although Paul Clements scored 44, Adrian Warne 34 and Andy Brenton 21, the last six wickets fell for only 21 runs. Liam Norwell took four for 43 and Phil Bostock three for 30 for the home side. In reply, it looked like Redruth might knock off the runs without losing a wicket as their opening pair reached 82. Then slow bowlers Mark Southcott and Ian Clements took four wickets between them to at least secure two bowling points before Redruth reached the required target. After winning the toss, Callington elected to bat on a good firm wicket at Gorran, but the home side made a good start when Australian Reece Curwen was well caught by Bob Adams' juggling slip catch from James Tomlinson's bowling in the seventh over when the score was 16. However, Gorran had to wait until 93 runs later and the 23rd over for a further success when John Parsons was caught behind by 'keeper Matthew House. The partnership between Dan Davis and Parsons laid the foundations for Callington's large score, but Gorran have only themselves to blame as Davis was dropped at mid-wicket before he had reached double figures. He went on to hit ten fours and two sixes in a fine innings of 70. A partnership of 89 between Andy Shorten (five fours and three sixes in his 78 not out) and Peter Tancock, 43, added a further 89 runs for the fourth wicket and they were helped by some short pitched deliveries from the Gorran bowlers which were severely punished. Reaching 284 for the loss of only five wickets, Callington set Gorran a task of scoring six an over throughout their reply to win. By the 20th over Gorran had been reduced to 63 for three and were well behind the required run rate. Their best partnership in their innings was of 72 for the fourth wicket between Matthew House (who hit five fours and two sixes in his 64) and Chris Lovell (who also hit five fours and two sixes in his 49), but it was only while these two were at the wicket that Gorran raised their run rate to reach four-an-over. When they were out, Gorran's challenge was effectively at an end. Callington's tight bowling and keen fielding kept Gorran's batting in a stranglehold from which they couldn't escape. There were two wickets apiece for Dan Davis, Chris Bennett and Sanjaya Rajapakse whilst Jim Shorten bowled his nine overs for only 25 runs and Luke Davis picked up a wicket for only 21 runs from his five overs.
