Cornwall's two badminton teams sponsored by Frame Homes (South West) Limited, Perranporth, ex-perienced mixed fortunes in their opening Inter-County championship campaigns at Pool School on Sunday.

The 'Chiefs', newly-promoted to regional division three, were seen to be in a clinical mood when defeating a West Glamorgan team by 13 rubbers to two (3 points - nil).

Meanwhile, in a division five encounter, the Duchy's second string went down gallantly, 9-6, to its Jersey counterparts, with Anita Othman securing a marvellous four wins out of four for the Islands team.

Laura Harper, aged 16, who is also one of England's top cricketing youngsters, made a promising county senior debut, before going down 11/7, 11/4 in the number two singles berth.

Chris Penhaligon, a sports and PE degree student at Plymouth's University college of St Mark and St John- who has won an 'Open' event and a hatrick of 'Closed' titles of late- was in supreme form once more for the 'Chiefs'.

He registered another four victories- singles, two mens doubles, partnering Nick Phelps and mixed, in tandem with Chris Marr.

Alison Philp, the Cornwall number one and county match secretary made a pleasing come-back, following injury, winning her mixed rubber in partnership with Bob Bell.

Bell, the first team player/manager commented: "My team have some tough matches ahead. However, this fantastic 13-2 result has given us all a great morale boost."

For the seconds, Phil Liddicoat, a St Austell Estate Agent and past Cornwall No. 1 and Neil Adams and the Truro City club, both recorded hatricks, including a brace of men's doubles victories in which the duo teamed up as a pair.

This Sunday at Pool School, the Cornwall Veterans Over-40 team takes on Hampshire I in the opening South West league fixture, starting at 1.00pm.
