The Cornwall Badminton First Team (+90 pts) sponsored by Frame Homes (South West) Ltd., Perranporth, have been drawn at home to Middlesex (scratch) - on a date to be confirmed - in the English Inter-County Badminton Challenge Quarter-Finals.
There was a disappointing entry overall to the Cornwall Badminton Association's Junior Under-13 and Under-18 Badminton Championships, sponsored by Frame Homes (South West) Ltd., Perranporth and held at Poltair Community School and Sports College, St Austell.
However, Jenny Marchant, the County Junior Secretary and Referee reported that there was a very encouraging 26 youngsters - 14 girls and 12 boys - competing in the Under-13 event at the same venue last weekend. The results from this age-group will be published next week.
Results from the first weekend - Under 13 Events, Boy's singles - Winner: Stuart Randall (St Austell Bay); Runner-up: Guy Mitchell, St Austell Bay.
Boy's doubles - Winners: Guy Mitchell and Phil Simmonds (St Austell Bay/First Edition); Runners-up: Stuart Randall and Thomas Randall (both St Austell Bay).
Under 18 Events, Boy's singles - Winner: James Allen (Callington); Runner-up: Ka-Hoo-Tse (First Edition).
Boy's doubles - Winners: Ross Haywood and Edward McGuffie (both St Austell Bay); Runners-up: Richard Andrews and Mark Gliddon (both Liskeard).
Girls' singles - Winner: Lucy Manico (Tecans); Runner-up: Zoe Frost (First Edition).
Semi-final draw for County Senior Competitions
The draw for the semi-finals of Cornwall County Badminton's two Senior Knock-Out competitions is as follows, with the Final being staged at Pool School, near Redruth on April 16th.
West Briton Bowl - Newquay, who accounted for the holders, Helston, in the Quarter-Finals, will play Tecans, while Truro City will entertain Penzance Corporation.
Carlton Handicapped Cup - Liskeard play Newquay, while Tecans take on Camelford A.
Restormel and Caradon Junior Badminton Opens
Following the announcement of a brace of Junior Badminton Opens, sponsored by two Cornish District Councils, there is an abundance of competitive Badminton action for youngsters over the next few weeks.
Firstly, the Restormel 'Open' Junior Badminton Competition, sponsored by Sports Development Restormel, is being held at Newquay Tretherra School, on Saturday March 25th from 10.00 am - 6.00 pm.
Youngsters in the Under-13 and Under-15 age groups (age qualification - 1st January 2000) are eligible to enter, with Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles events being included in the 10 disciplines of play overall.
Entry fees are £1.00 per person, per event and your contact for application forms and other details is Keith and Linzi Clement, tel: 01726-75923. Closing date for entries is March 23rd.
Last year, Restormel Borough Council's Tim Slater and Dave Hocking, together with the Organisers, Mr and Mrs Clement were delighted with the excellent entry of around 70 competitors and are anticipating another successful weekend.
Meanwhile, the Caradon 'Open' Badminton Tournament is being staged over two weekends, back-to-back, at Callington Sports Centre.
The Under-15's and Under-18's are on court on Saturday March 11th, while the Under-11 and Under-13 age groups will be in action on Saturday March 18th (2.00 pm - 6.00 pm for both days).
The closing date for entries for this 'Caradon Sporting Chance' Tournament is on the Friday preceding the Event days.
