THE Waterside Explorer Scouts Unit held a presentation evening at Saltash Wesley Hall last Wednesday evening when several Scouts were presented with Duke of Edinburgh 'bronze' awards and Chief Scouts awards. Neil Carvell, Explorer Scout Leader welcomed the mayor of Saltash, Sue Hooper and her consort, John, the Scout County Commissioner for Cornwall, Bob Ellis and his wife, and County Scout Adviser for the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, Sue Roseveare. After giving a brief discussion on the activities involved in gaining the D of E award and Chief Scouts award the following Scouts received their certificates and badges. Duke of Edinburgh Bronze awards went to Chris Murch, Coral Higham and Richard Kantharia, Chief Scout awards went to Chris Murch and Richard Kantharia, while Michael Smith was the recipient of the Chief Scout Diamond award. Congratulating the young people the mayor said that they had set a good example to the many young people who were roaming the streets not wanting to do anything. She hoped the Scout Movement would long continue to give young people such good opportunities, to achieve so much. The young people had taken part in tough expeditions on Dartmoor in very wet and rough weather, helped with the Cub Scout Packs, done environmental work, and increased their knowledge of the International side of the Scout Movement.
