COUNTY Scout Commissioner Bob Ellis visited Saltash on Wednesday evening to present Explorer Scouts of the Waterside Unit with Chief Scout awards. Guests were welcomed by Neil Carvell, Explorer Scout Leader, then a slide show was presented on the unit's visit to Snowdonia last year and taking part in numerous activities such as climbing, canoeing, river crossing by rope, hiking, swimming and high rope course. The County Commissioner congratulated the Explorer Scouts Will Scott and Tom Simpson with their Platinum award and then the highest award, the Diamond, to Richard Kantharia. District Commissioner, Maureen Carvell, presented Duke of Edinburgh Bronze awards to Nathan Higham, and Thomas Simpson. A bronze award also went to Thomas Kantharia who was unable to be present. A Duke of Edinburgh Silver award was presented to Richard Kantharia. The Scouts had passed various tests including Dartmoor rescue, snow boarding, camping, sporting activities, music andhelping with Cubs. A Moving On award went to Luke Freeman who was unable to attend through illness and other awards included Nights Away Stage 4 badge to Tom Simpson, and Water Activities badge to Richard Kantharia A special award, a wheel chair Values Challenge went to Richard Kantharia and Chris Murch who went around various shops in Plymouth using a wheel chair to see how accessible the premises were and also how the staff of the shops helped them. Some shops were difficult to move around with a wheel chair and others they could not get above the ground floor, and narrow aisles proved a problem. Going around the shopping areas where there were cobbles were not very comfortable for the person in a wheelchair.
