REMEMBRANCE activities in South East Cornwall included the presentation of the Freedom of the Town to a local Royal British Legion branch, and the awarding of certificates to volunteers doing good work in their town.
Liskeard’s RBL branch has celebrated its 100th anniversary this year, like the national Royal British Legion.
Mayor Simon Cassidy was pleased to present President Trevor Newbury and Chairman Chrissie Heywood with a scroll honouring the RBL with the Freedom of the Town following the town’s Remembrance Service.
Trevor said of the honour: “It was a privilege to accept the honour of the Freedom of the Town from the Mayor, Simon Cassidy.
“The RBL has been providing welfare for the service community for the past 100 years.
“Liskeard RBL has been supporting that effort also for 100 years, having been formed in September 1921. With the help and support of the Liskeard community we hope to carry on with the Legion’s essential work for as long as needed.”
In Callington, members of community-based organisations received ’Citizen of the Year’ awards from the Town Council after the Remembrance Service and Parade.
Portreeve Mike Tagg took the opportunity to present awards and certificates to the following:
Citizen of the Year Individual award to Alison Humphreys of Share (South Hill Association for Renewable Energy) for recycling services to the Callington area.
Citizen of the Year Group award to both The Callington Soup Run Team – it was accepted by June Trevithick on behalf of the team – and The Callington Food Bank – it was accepted by Peter Whitting on behalf of the team.
In addition, as a one-off award for this year, the Callington Poppy Volunteers received a voucher as a thank you for all their hard work on creating the fabulous Poppy Wave and additional decoration throughout Callington Town Centre.
