Three athletes from East Cornwall, together with another from Plymouth who is also coached by Mike Erith, returned from the British Masters Indoor Athletic Championships with a total of eight medals including four golds. The annual event held at the 200 metre Cardiff Indoor Track is for masters athletes – previously called veterans – who are males aged over 40 or females over 35. They compete in five year age groups up to 90 years, or older, although numbers diminish in the older age groups. Competition remains keen and there were some outstanding performances by these very fit older athletes. Barbara Lock (Cornwall AC) of Seaton, last year's W45 champion, was British Masters Champion (W50) in both the 400 and 800 metres. The 400 metres saw Barbara breaking lanes after the first lap well in front and another fast relaxed second lap gave her a clear victory in 65.3 seconds. On the second day her attempt at the world indoor 800 metre W50 record was foiled in that she was so far in front that she let her pace slip slightly finishing just two seconds outside the record in 2min 27.17 sec. This was disappointing for Barbara knowing that in a more competitive race she may have run faster, having recorded 2.21 outdoors last August in the European Masters. Kate Rogers (City of Plymouth AC) of Pensilva had a busy weekend when she ran a personal best 400 metres (W45) of 68.47secs when finishing seventh, before going on to win a bronze medal in the 1500 metres. On the second day she tackled the 800 metres and ran a well judged race to secure her first ever gold medal at British Masters competitions when she crossed the line in 2.36.81. Less than an hour later she was out on the boards again to compete in the 3000 metre event, and despite her tiredness still managed to get a bronze medal. These athletes will now be setting their sites on the World Masters Championships to be held in San Sebastian later this summer.
