CLIFF McKane was greeted with a round of applause when he became the new chairman of Callington Town Band, the post having been vacant since April when Roger Ellard resigned due to pressure of work. Cliff has lived in Callington for 32 years and is well known in the town having been, at various times, vice-chairman, chairman and president of Callington Rugby Club. He was also a member of the Entertainment Committee which organized Callington Carnival and children's parties many years ago and initiated the Kit Hill Run when it started from Fore Street. In later years the Lions took over the Carnival and Callington and District Sports Association (CADSA) took over the Kit Hill Run. Both Cliff and his wife, Beryl, are keen supporters of the town band and their son, Kevin, and daughter- in-law, Jane both play in it. Cliff and Beryl, through Callington History Group, are busy researching the history of the band and their search has unearthed a newspaper cutting from the Cornish Times dated 1859 when the band led a parade of the Philanthropic Society. Some of this information has already found its way onto Callington Town's website and they are hoping that it will need continual up-dating as more photographs and news items come to light. Anyone who can offer assistance with the research, can call Cliff and Beryl on Liskeard (01579) 382272. Cliff will be attending his first official function as chairman of the band when it gives its autumn concert on Saturday, October 22, at St Mary's Church, beginning at 7.30pm.
