MOTORISTS are furious at news that car parking charges are set to rise throughout the area. Caradon District Council is proposing that car parking costs increase by an average of 10p per tariff and 5p per tariff for Caradon Parking Card holders. At Rapsons car park in Liskeard a year long unreserved space permit is set to rise from £30+VAT to £102+VAT with daily costs going from 60p to £1. 'As you can expect it is something we are not very happy about' Richard Southam, chairman of Liskeard chamber of commerce said. 'If they put parking up in Caradon again it could drive people out. 'We will again oppose it but we will again be ignored. The council does what it wants.' Carolyn Jude, manager of Peter Briggs shoe shop in Liskeard, fears the rise in the cost of a car parking permit for Rapsons would also effect future staff employment. 'It's a terrible rise,' she said. 'Some of my girls won't be able to pay that price, especially if they're only working a couple of hours. It just won't be worth it.' Carolyn believes the rise is a large amount to pay up front. 'It's a lot to pay in just one lump sum,' she said. 'Perhaps if there was an option of the monthly payment they would use that. 'I think this will effect my chances of getting staff in the future as people will need somewhere to park.' She also feared that it would drive people out of town. 'When the development (The Bubble) in town is finished people will do all their shopping our there and won't come into the town centre.' she said. Another shop manager Julie Roberts, manageress of Bricknalls toy shop in Liskeard is also worried about the price hike. 'From a member of staff's point a view it's quite a lot of money for only working two days a week. That increase for an annual permit is quite a change.' 'I think it's disgraceful,' added Joan Symons of Widegates. 'Three years ago when I started parking here it was 30p a day. 'The price is a phenomenal difference in cost. I think a lot of people will be put off and will be going to find road side parking.' Lisa Sandercock who works at Coodes said:'It's a big jump in price' 'I commute in every day and it's going to add to my weekly bill.' An annual reserved space ticket at Higher Lux Street in Liskeard could now cost £199.50 plus VAT from a price of £127.50. In Callington an annual reserved ticket for Back Lane car park is set to increase from £290 to £386 plus VAT per double space. An unreserved year-long permit at Cawsand's car park could go from £161 plus VAT to £194 plus VAT. For an unreserved ticket at Looe's Millpool car park the cost could be £249.75 plus VAT compared to £161 plus VAT last year. An increase of more than £30 is proposed at Alexandra Square in Saltash, with prices going from £161 plus VAT to £194 plus VAT. The same price rise has been suggested at Torpoint's Antony Road car park. Jerry Masters, Caradon District Council's head of operations and technical services, said the reason behind the increase was the lack of funding received by the council. 'Our annual funding settlement from the government, although not as low as in previous years, is just not enough to cover all the costs of our services and responsibilities,' he said. 'Caradon is making efficiency savings and looking at cutting back on non-essential services, but even that won't be enough to meet the £800,000 shortfall required to operate the essential services the community expects Caradon to provide. 'We need to raise alternative income, and putting up all fees and charges would mean that less of the shortfall would have to be covered by council tax increases.' The order proposing the price increase can be inspected at Caradon's offices between 9.30am and noon, and 2-4pm Monday to Friday. People can object to the proposals by writing to the council before February 24.
