THE shabby condition of Liskeard's main public toilets at Westbourne car park is likely to remain unchanged unless Cornwall Council decides to spend any money on a refurbishment.

Town clerk Andrew Deacon says he has been writing letters of complaint to County Hall about the poor state of the toilets on an almost monthly basis for the last year but nothing has been done.

Tiles and plaster are falling off the walls, the washing facilities don't work properly, and other repairs are needed as well as decoration to the outside of the building.

Cornwall Council is going to spend a total of £1m on the maintenance and upkeep of its public conveniences but Liskeard's toilets have not been included.

Mr Deacon said this was a disgrace: 'There has been a lot of anger at the town council meetings and the town forum that Cornwall Council is not doing anything about the toilets. For the sake of expenditure of probably no more than £2,000, we are left with a facility that is an embarrassment to Liskeard.'

Mr Deacon said complaints were received in the town council offices on an almost weekly basis about the Westbourne toilets, especially from visitors to the town.

Town forum chairman Mike Gregory said the toilets were in an atrocious condition.

Cornwall Councillor Jan Powell said: 'I will be making it my business to find out why Liskeard has not been identified for help.'
