The sixth annual World Pasty Championships will be taking place at the Eden Project tomorrow (March 4), with competitors from across the globe competing for the coveted Oggy Oscars.

Nearly 200 pasties across nine categories will be judged by a panel of around 40 judges.

Competitors include:

Mike ’The Pasty’ Burgess, who will be travelling from the outskirts of Washington DC, from where his Pure Pasty Co. supplies customers in the seat of US government.

Jorge Pereira, a Chilean miner, who will be returning for the first time since he was victorious in the Open Savoury Amateur category in 2015.

Reigning Pasty Ambassador Matt Grant, of The Great British Pasty and Pie Co. in Ottawa, Canada, who will be returning for his third consecutive championships.

Completing the contingent from the Americas are Gerry and Marlee Ramier of the Piskie Pie Company, in St Catherine’s, Ontario, Canada, a short distance from the Niagara Falls.

World-record breaking climber Ginge Fullen, from Fort William in Scotland, will be competing for the first time this year.

A mother-daughter combination - Becky Penrose and her daughter Megan, 13, both from Exeter in Devon - will be entering the competition.

The entertainment line-up is headed by event favourites Fisherman’s Friends, actor and comedian Kernow King and Mercury-nominated folk star Kathryn Williams.

Kathryn will be collaborating with her friend and solo artist Michele Stodart, who is bassist, vocalist and co-songwriter of the double-platinum-selling pop rock band The Magic Numbers.

Callington’s Kit Hillbillies are also on the entertainment bill.

Categories are open to professional, amateur and junior pasty-makers for best Cornish pasty, open savoury and, for the first time this year, gluten-free.

The winner of the gluten-free section - which is open to amateur bakers only - will have a chance for their prize pasty to be developed into a commercial product with the help of bakery Let Them Eat, based in Saltash.

The event concludes with the presentation of the Oggy Oscars at around 5pm.
