Sterts Theatre is marking the centenary year of women being given the vote with a special all-female production.?The cast, director, stage manager, sound and crew of ’Steel Magnolias’ are all female.?The 1980s play by Robert Harling was made famous by the film of the same name, starring Julia Roberts, Sally Field and Dolly Parton.?It’s a touching and funny tale of a group of women who meet in a beauty parlour in Southern America and support each other through life’s ups and downs.?Now Truvy’s beauty parlour has been transported to the open-air arts centre at Upton Cross and the play’s director Bernice Strickland says her female cast have been laughing and crying themselves as they rehearse.?‘Our own relationships and friendships have grown with the characters’ and we’ve supported each other through some tough times as well as having great fun,’ she said.?‘It’s a universal story of friendship, support, death, love and marriage. It could just as easily be set in Liskeard as Louisiana.’?Steel Magnolias opens at Sterts tonight (July 5) and runs until Thursday, September 13, with eight performances.?There are details at sterts.co.uk
