A MAJOR route linking South East Cornwall with West Devon is now open, though with traffic signals in place to control traffic on a hill where work is continuing to stabilise a wall on a steep hillside.

Earlier this week motorists trying to use the A390 between Callington and Tavistock faced a 25-mile diversion via Greystones Bridge and Milton Abbot. This was due to Newbridge Hill at Gunnislake having to be closed from August 6 due to concerns over the safety of a retaining wall at Rosemary Cottage.

Work on the wall and bank by Cormac has now progressed sufficiently for one lane of the road down to the Newbridge crossing over the River Tamar to be reopened, but delays are possible due to traffic control by two-way signals being in place on the section of road at Gunnislake past Rosemary Cottage.

Meanwhile, nearer Callington, additional delays are possible due to traffic control by convoy working remaining in place on a stretch of the A390 being resurfaced where it passes Kit Hill near West Prince Farm. This work is scheduled to continue until Monday (August 13).

There are also some streets closed and multiple sets of roadworks in Callington town itself.
