TWELVE students from Cornwall College Saltash have helped to brighten up Saltash's Fore Street in time for the town's Christmas celebrations. The students took to the street on Monday as part of the community art module that makes up their two year National Diploma course, producing artwork used to cover up the old Toy Library's boarded-up window on Fore Street. Student Adam Moffatt, 17, said: 'We were pleased to give something back to the community. I live in Saltash and we are just hoping that it gets a good reaction from the public.' Noah Taylor, part-time lecturer at the college, praised the 'committed and enthusiastic' attitude of the students, suggesting that bringing the students' artwork outside onto the main street allowed Saltash residents the chance to see how talented pupils were, and what was actually going on within the town's schools. The design was based on a number of key criteria, and fused Cornish myths and heritage with 60's psychedelia, giving the artwork a contemporary feel. And while the current design captures the spirit of Christmas, plans are already under way to create a different design to be displayed on the shop front next year. Once the artwork was put up, passers-by and residents stopped to look. One visitor to Saltash enthused: 'It has certainly filled an empty space which could have been ugly. This is a definite improvement.' Saltash mayor, Sue Hooper, said of the design: 'It is a very clever idea and I welcome young people's input into designing public art. It is a useful and innovative theme and an improvement on what was there before. 'I am sure that people will appreciate the effort that was put into the design and the work that went into it from Saltash students.'
