POLICE are warning people of a computer software scam which has duped people out of thousands of pounds.
The computersoftware service fraud sees predominantly Indian call centres telling victims they are from legitimate businesses, such as Microsoft. They state there is a problem with the victim’s computer which they say they will fix free of charge. Instead those targeted are duped out of money.
Fraud and potential scams can be reported to the National Fraud and Cyber Crime Reporting Centre via www.actionfraud.
police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040.
They are also warning people about two email scams.
One claims Amazon accounts have been breached but they have not. The fake email from ukamazon
verify.co.uk asks users to complete an account verification process but police say no-one should enter any personal or bank details.
The other purports to be an email from Lloyds Bank staff member Chang Crabtree which asks the recipient to return a document which is malicious and could infect the computer and take any bank details.
If you spot a suspicious email mark it spam and delete it.
