A THREE-month-old baby was taken into emergency care in Cornwall yesterday by police after reports a woman seen with the child in a car at a supermarket was not in a fit state to look after it.
Officers were called to a Tesco in Pool shortly after 12.20am but the woman, who police believe was not the child’s mother but may have been looking after the baby, had already left.
More than two hours later, at 2.30am, officers took the child into emergency care from an address in nearby Camborne.
A spokesman said: ‘There were concerns that the woman was not fit to be looking after the child.
‘We followed up the enquiries at an address in Camborne where we have taken a three-month-old child into police protection, for the child’s welfare, because we believe that the lady was not in a fit state to be looking after the child.’
The child was then transferred into the care of social services.
Asked if any charge had been brought against the woman, the spokesman said: ‘Police enquiries are ongoing.’
