A COMMUNITY garden in Polperro is taking shape with the planting out of 100 saplings.

Polperro Environmental Group (PEG) has been working on the project to create a forest garden at Brackenside for more than two years.

Volunteers spent a day planting 100 native trees for hedging which had been donated by the Woodland Trust.

The forest garden will include as much edible produce from trees as possible, and the young trees being planted included crab apple and hazel, said Bridget Webb of PEG.

'The project was started by clearing an area which used to be allotments 100 years or so ago. It had become completely taken over, mainly by sycamore,' said Bridget.

'Hopefully it's a place where children and all sorts of people will be able to go and enjoy the natural environment – and look at local species of trees and animals,' said Bridget.

Other aspects to the shared area include a wildlife pond and seating around a fire pit.

The project is going ahead in partnership with the National Trust, who own the land, and PEG hope that lots of local people will get involved, said Bridget.

'We want to encourage anyone who would like to come and join us – look out for posters in Polperro,' she added.
