LISKEARD-LOOE and St Austell rugby players joined forces to take on a Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service team in the Michael 'Sonny' Liston Memorial Match at Lux Park.

The fixture marked the 20th anniversary of the death of 'Sonny', with the Fire Service team being accompanied by the Cornwall Fire Service Ceremonial Crew Standard Bearers and the Devon and Somerset Pipes and Drums.

Keeping the family connection, the three match officials were his nephews.

A crowd of around 250 observed a minute's silence to remember 'Sonny', who died on the pitch while playing for Liskeard-Looe after inhaling toxic fumes at a fire he attended the previous day. His memory was honoured in fine style, with the Fire Service team, led by Sonny's colleague, Mark Goldsmith, winning 22-5.
