Liskeard Tigers 12
Plymouth Pilgrims 10
Liskeard Tigers kicked off the new season with the slimmest of victories over Plymouth Pilgrims 3.
It was the Plymouth side who impressed the most in the first quarter converting their first centre and, taking advantage of Tigers’ missed attempt, took a two-goal advantage at the end of the first period of play.
Tigers found their feet in the second, however, and were able to bring the deficit to one goal with some excellent defending by GK Kay Barker and GD Vicky Hastings. The midcourt also worked hard to work the ball into the shooting circle. However, ex-Liskeard defender Holly Lemon and Pilgrims GK ramped up the pressure on GS Vicky Stone and GA Della Maloney forcing a long shot and were able to rattle the Liskeard attack.
Gemma Cliffe replaced Sophie Thomas at WA at the start of the third quarter but again Pilgrims started the stronger, increasing their lead in the early stages.
Debbie Drinkell at WD won some key interceptions and Cliffe and centre Erin Beale worked the ball into the shooting circle well. GS Stone found her form and was able to find her range with some excellent long-range shots. Tigers were able to square the match at 7-7 setting the game up nicely for an exciting finish.
Sophie Thomas returned to the court, replacing Beale who had taken a knock to the face. Playing in an unfamiliar position, Thomas used her court presence to link well with defence and WA Cliffe enabling Tigers shooters to have more shots at goal.
Down at the other end defensive duo Hastings and Barker worked tirelessly to disrupt the Pilgrims’ attack. It was a defensive quarter with the whole team working hard to pressure every ball. Liskeard were rewarded by a two-goal victory.
Final score: Liskeard Tigers 12 Plymouth Pilgrims 10.
Tigers’ player of the match was Della Maloney for her energetic and acrobatic catching display. Tigers team awarded Holly Lemon Pilgrims’ player of the match.
