Looe Sailing Club

The final race of the six-race series for the National Redwing Championships saw the weather change bringing clear blue skies and a pleasant south-westerly breeze making the job of race officer Dominic Lozynski fairly easy in laying the course in Looe Bay.

Looking along the start line was a sailing connoisseurs delight as the clinker built red-sailed dinghies jostled for position.

Race leader at the windward mark was Paul Dunn helming his new boat Red Kite with Gareth Shaw on the wire, followed by Colin Crabb and Adam Hayler. As the race progressed Crabb closed the gap until the final leg up to the finishing line when in a tacking match he capsized giving Dunn a clear run to the line. Peter Kinver and Joe Palfrey took advantage of Crabb’s misfortune to nip in for second place with Dave Jackman and John Crabb in third spot.

Congratulations to overall winners Matt Jaycock and Francis Marshall from Looe with two wins, two seconds and a third place after discarding their lowest place. Thanks go to the race committee, safety boat crews, beach masters and to the catering team for all their hard work towards making the week such a success.

Following a meal at the Sail Loft the presentations for a successful week took place in the sailing club conducted by the new Redwing chairman Jack Pope. The evening concluded with the traditional alternative presentations made in his own inimitable style by Geoff Godbolt.

Results: 1 DoDo, Matt Jaycock and Francis Marshall; 2 Red Kite, Paul Dunn and Chris Jackman/Gareth Shaw; 3 Shytalk, Dave Jackman and John Crabb.
