China Fleet Golf Club’s small junior section claimed a victory at Carlyon Bay when they became the inaugural winners of the Kernow Cup.

In the competition set up this year to create additional competitive golf for clubs with both small and large junior sections, the China Fleet trio (brother and sister Lewis and Ashleigh Woolaway together with Alex Swabey) came out top after beating the Truro Albatross all-girl team 2-1 in an exciting final.

Two Truro teams had qualified for the finals day and in the morning semi-finals draw they were kept apart as China Fleet took on the Truro Eagles and St Austell Saints played Truro Albatross side.

In their semi-final China Fleet claimed an early scalp as Ashleigh Woolaway took care of Truro Eagles’ Oscar Massey by a 7&5 margin. When brother Lewis won 3&2 against Liam Wilson the Fleet club had reached the final. Their third member Alex Swabey halved his match with Ricardo Sanchez to give his team a 2.5-0.5 win.

Truro Albatross came through in their match with St Austell Saints with a 3-0 win.

The 3rd/4th place play-off was won by Truro Eagles as they beat St Austell Saints 2.5-0.5.

The final between China Fleet and Truro Albatross did not disappoint with some excellent golf and the result in doubt to the very end.

Lewis Woolaway was playing Emily Wilson with the latter going three up through the halfway point. However, the diminutive Woolaway would not let go and he clawed his way back into the match and took a one-up lead to the 18th tee. A slightly errant tee shot at the par 3 final hole led to a four for him and, despite missing the green on the top side, a sweetly-played chip by Wilson saw her make par and take the match to extra holes.

The Carlyon Bay layout prevents viewing of the closing holes, so while Wilson and Woolaway headed again to the first they did not know what was unfolding behind them. As events transpired Swabey won his match 2&1 over Andrew and in the number three position Trewellha levelled things with a two-up win over Ashleigh Woolaway.

Lewis and Emily halved the first extra hole in 5s and so went to the 20th. Woolaway – with a shot on the hole – hit an excellent tee shot which was matched by Wilson. Lewis laid up short of the green in two while Wilson was unlucky to find a difficult lie in the greenside bunker. When she failed to get up and down the game was over and China Fleet had claimed an overall victory.
